The Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) is a principal government organ that maintains law and order and coordinates search and rescue operations within the Malaysian Maritime Zone. In October 2012, ten new intervention crafts of the ONUK MRTP16 type were delivered to the MMEA by BYO Marine Sdn Bhd.
BYO Marine Sdn Bhd was established in 2009 and is a joint venture between the Malaysian-based Bousted Heavy Industries Corporation Defence Technologies (BHICDT), a subsidiary of the Boustead Heavy Industries Group (BHIC), and Yonca-Onuk JV (YO), a company based in Turkey. Merging the best of two worlds, BHIC is specialized in marine-related activities, while Yonca-Onuk JV excels in the field of constructing fast boats using advanced composites.
Based on the proven ONUK MRTP15 used by the Turkish Coast Guard, the ONUK MRTP16 has benefitted from a range of improvements. With an improved deep V hull, it has a versatile Multi-Role Tactical Platform (MRTP), offering superior sea keeping, maneuverability and increased robustness, while ensuring that its passengers stay dry. With more than 70 units in service of, among others, the Turkish customs and the Turkish Ministry of Health, the ONUK MRTP16 combines versatility with extreme speed.
Intensive professional use and long service life put high demands on these vessels. Diab’s composites H45, H60, H80, H100, H130 and H200 were considered the best choice for the project, meeting all of the tough requirements. The light-weight composite reduces the weight of the boat, which improves speed and performance while saving fuel. It also limits the impact of machinery vibration, magnetic signature and heat signature. Another benefit is the corrosion resistance, allowing for longer service life and more time between maintenance. In case of a violent encounter, the composite material improves ballistic protection.
The ONUK MRTP16 can reach a speed of 70 knots in calm waters and above 45 knots in Sea State 3, making it comparable to a helicopter. Unlike a helicopter, however, the vessel can be used in confined spots and in rough weather conditions, making it a truly versatile tool for the MMEA.
